about
This song FOOTSTEPS is a cover of Fertile Rock by Luka Bloom, which got hold of me some years ago with the line -
"footsteps...I can learn to listen".
The footprints on the cover, are 20,000 years old, preserved in clay and exposed when the 'sands of time' shifted in recent years. The photo was taken by the Australian Museum, who have worked with local people to fully document, and preserve the footprints by re-covering them in sand.
I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the Lake Mungo region, the Mutthi Mutthi, Ngiyampaa, Barkandji, whose ancestors have lived in that landscape for over 60,000 years, and whose culture lives on today.
For future generations, let's take a deep breath, and learn from the oldest culture on this planet.

FOOTSTEPS (Cover of 'Fertile Rock' by Luka Bloom)
This version by Bill Tatnell
In the red sandy desert
Lies the heart of woman and man
Find a deep well to draw from
And give back what you can
In the moonlight musicians
Singing songs in a spirit wind
In the shadows where the old one’s sheltered
The painter's work begins
Chorus
Footsteps…..I could learn to listen
Footsteps…. how I long for place
Footsteps….. I could learn to listen
To footsteps, of an ancient race … The fertile rock, not for sale
Ay - Yi - Yi
Ay - Yi - Yi
To the red sandy desert
Roll the wheels of greed
Wells dry forever
The ghost gum starts to bleed
In the moonlight musicians
Singing songs in a spirit wind
And in the shadows where the ancient's sheltered
The painter's work begins ……………The fertile rock, walk there
….. The fertile rock, not for sale
