about

This song is dedicated to Stephen Boyden, Emeritus Professor at ANU Canberra, who has been a champion of the ‘biosphere narrative’ for much of his adult life of 97 years.

The central theme of this song, that recurs in biosphere thinking, is change, its cyclic motion, the earth's continuous revolution - not all revolutions are violent! Living better on this beautiful planet is a revolution that is being led by the millions of people who seek a more cohesive and sustainable society.

Biosphere dreaming is not a ‘day dream’, it’s a ‘hardcore wisdom’ that Stephen expresses so well. The changes needed will take good ideas, indigenous knowledge, and new understandings to grow in a billion minds. Stephen, as a leader of many students through his biosphere narrative, has worked tirelessly to set the scene for the challenges ahead.

While I have not found the word ‘revolution’ in my reading of Stephen’s work, as one of his lifetime students, a ‘quiet revolution’ is written all over it! You can check out Stephen's website: biorenaissance.net

lyrics

THE QUIET REVOLUTIONARY

Illusions and ideas contested for glory
Blue Planet is feeling each blow
While truth-seekers connect with biosphere dreaming
Ambitions like wildfire glow
Knowledge can quell the most dangerous fire
The quiet revolutionary knows
Knowledge is water, can wash away problems
And help all the good ideas grow

We are hunters-collectors
On a beautiful planet
Don’t break it by pushing too far
Although you’re surrounded by concrete and chaos
I remember each day who we are

The quiet revolutionary plays his guitar
That the luthier so carefully restored
Like a good idea growing, song to be sung
Just hoping to strike the right chord
Songs for a planet, shifting its axis
Evolution earth’s musical score
Like his old guitar, earth needs some repair
That’s what biosphere dreaming is for

He said: We are hunters-collectors
On a beautiful planet
Don’t break it by pushing too far
Don’t forget to protect
Precious things that you love
We’re all made from dust from the stars

Illusions and ideas contested for glory
Blue Planet is feeling each blow
While truth-seekers connect with biosphere dreaming
Ambitions like wildfire glow
Knowledge can quell the most dangerous fire
The quiet revolutionary knows
Knowledge is water, can wash away problems
And help all the good ideas grow

We are hunters-collectors
On a beautiful planet
Don’t break it by pushing too far
Don’t forget to protect
Precious things that you love
Remember there’s no life on Mars
